Return once again with the mischievous family of Gru in 'Despicable Me 3', the sequel that takes us across the globe to meet Dru, his long-lost twin brother, and the 80s villain Balthazar Bratt. The film retains its humor and warmth, but also has points that may disappoint some fans.
Plot Summary (No Spoilers)
Gru leaves his villainous life to become a secret agent, but fails to capture Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker), a former 80s child star turned villain, causing Gru to get fired. Meanwhile, his wife Lucy also loses her job. At the same time, Gru receives a letter from the butler of a mansion in the country of Freedonia, revealing that he has a twin brother named Dru (also voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to meet him. Gru takes his family to meet Dru and finds that he has blond hair, dresses elegantly, and wants to be a villain like Gru in the past.
Acting and Characters
Steve Carell continues to do an excellent job voicing Gru, as well as Dru, clearly showing their different personalities. Kristen Wiig remains cute and active as Lucy. Trey Parker creates the villain Balthazar Bratt, who is both boastful and funny with an 80s vibe, especially the hit song 'Bad' by Michael Jackson, which is used perfectly. The three children – Margo, Edith, and Agnes – are still adorable, especially Agnes with her unicorn.
Direction, Visuals, and Music
Kyle Balda, co-director of the previous installment, takes the helm solo in this one. The result maintains Illumination's standard: bright colors, smooth action scenes, especially the diamond chase that opens the film. The score by Frederik Wiedmann (Heitor Pereira is absent) still uses familiar melodies from previous films but adds 80s flair, especially Bratt's songs that make us smile.
Editorial Analysis
Although 'Despicable Me 3' is fun and has well-timed jokes, especially the Minions who return to cause chaos, the story is not as strong as the first film. Adding the character Dru and the twin plot feels like filler, and the villain Balthazar Bratt, while amusing, is not threatening and lacks depth compared to Vector from the first film. However, the film still conveys a good message about family and self-acceptance, especially in the heartwarming ending.
